A foreigner can marry in Thailand in one of two ways: a legally binding registration at a district office, which takes about a week of paperwork in Bangkok, or a symbolic ceremony in Phuket with the legal registration done at home. Most couples we work with choose the second: the ceremony on the beach or at a villa with the vows and the photographs, the legal part where the documents are simplest. The budget for the ceremony itself starts at 10,000 ฿ for the venue; a villa wedding for 20 guests with dinner, decor, sound, light and a photographer is about 103,000 ฿.

Legal or symbolic?

A symbolic ceremony has no paperwork: any date, any venue, any celebrant, and the vows can be in any language. A legal marriage in Thailand is recognised worldwide, but requires documents from your embassy and a trip to Bangkok — worth it when you live in Thailand or want the certificate for a visa; unnecessary when you only want the wedding. Since January 2025 Thailand registers same-sex marriages under the Marriage Equality Act, so both routes are open to every couple.

Legal registration: the four steps

  1. Affirmation of freedom to marry from your embassy in Bangkok — a statement that you are single and free to marry, issued to each foreign partner. Embassies require an appointment and their own list of documents (passport, proof of divorce or a death certificate where relevant); requirements change, so check with the embassy first.
  2. Thai translation of the affirmation by a licensed translator — 300–1,000 ฿ per document, one day; translation offices sit next to the ministry.
  3. Legalisation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Chaeng Watthana, Bangkok) — about 200 ฿ per document normal service, 400 ฿ express; two to three working days, or next day express.
  4. Registration at any district office (amphur) in Thailand — both partners in person with passports, the legalised documents and two witnesses over 20 with ID. The certificate is issued the same day, in Thai; an English translation for use abroad is legalised at the same ministry.

Plan five to seven working days in Bangkok for the whole chain, or use an agent who runs steps 2–4 in two days. The registration can be done in Phuket at a district office once the documents are legalised; the embassy and the ministry are in Bangkok.

November to April is the dry season with reliable sunsets and calm sea — most weddings happen then and the venues book out six to twelve months ahead. May to October is the green season: short heavy showers, lower prices, and a covered fallback for the ceremony is a must.

Frequently asked questions

Is a wedding ceremony in Phuket legally binding?

Only if you register at a district office with the embassy affirmation legalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A ceremony on the beach by itself is symbolic — most international couples do the legal registration at home and the celebration in Phuket.

How long does the legal registration take?

Five to seven working days in Bangkok for the embassy appointment, translation, legalisation and the district office; with an agent the paperwork after the embassy takes two days. Plan it for the week before the wedding.

What documents do we need?

Passports, the affirmation of freedom to marry from each foreign partner's embassy (with proof of a previous divorce or a spouse's death where relevant), its Thai translation legalised by the ministry, and two witnesses over 20 with ID at the district office.

Can two foreigners marry in Thailand?

Yes — both partners bring an affirmation from their own embassy; a Thai partner brings a Thai ID card and house registration instead. Same-sex couples have registered since January 2025.

What does a wedding in Phuket cost?

The ceremony venue from 10,000 ฿; a villa wedding for 20 guests with dinner, decor, sound, light and photography about 103,000 ฿; a 50-guest wedding with a host, live music, video and a free flow bar 280,000–380,000 ฿ excluding accommodation.
